Due to the great complexity and the enormous variance that we can find in a Hazmat incident, it is necessary to be able to adapt the NBC decontamination capabilities to the specific characteristics of that concrete Hazmat incident that is being managed. There are 4 fundamental variables that must be considered in order to choose the most efficient decontamination lance:
1. Type of Decontamination
Water-based decontamination technologies are divided into three broad categories:
- Decontamination with Low Pressure (decontamination of people and terrain)
- Decontamination with High Pressure (decontamination of vehicles and materials)
- Decontamination with steam
The decontamination lances are the necessary accessory to carry out the decontamination of the last two points (High Pressure and Vapor). Generally, the decontamination protocols determine that the decontamination of vehicles must be done with High Pressure, while the decontamination of materials can be done with both High Pressure and Steam. The choice of one or the other alternative is determined both by the nature of the material (CBRN protective suits, protective helmets, containers, walls, floors, etc.) and by the Hazmat incident scenario (a small enclosed enclosure, an open enclosure). , etc).
2. Type of Contamination Agent
Depending on the type of pollutant that has produced the Hazmat incident (a biological agent, a chemical agent or a radiological agent), the appropriate decontaminant should be applied.

3. Decontamination process Phases
CBRN decontamination protocols determine that decontamination of vehicles is a procedure that consists of 3 phases:
- Prewash
- Decontamination
- Cleared up
The 3 phases are applied consecutively to each vehicle, so from the operational point of view this means that we need to have 3 different lances (and exchange them in each phase of the process) or with a combined lance 3-in-1 that allows with a single lance to perform the 3 phases.
4. Contaminated object characteristics
The physical characteristics of the contaminated object, especially in the case of vehicles, make it necessary to have specific lances that allow decontamination to be carried out in places that are difficult to access.
